hi, i recently racked quite a debt due to my gambling addiction. i owe credit card companies about 40k. that amount is not from purchases but from balance tranfer checks that I cashed to use for gambling. basically, i didnt use any of the check to consolidate debts. I know my credit is ruined because I haven’t paid them in a while. I do however, want to pay them back but I cant afford to pay all of it. I need help deciding if I should file for bankruptcy or apply for debt consolidation. I have a stable job but it would take me a gazillion years to pay all of it. I want to start fresh and start rebuilding my credit. Please help!

Over time i have accumulated large credit and personal loan debt that i am really hurting from today. In the past 6-12 months i have been making minimal payments on all the credit cards on time. The interest rates are high on the credit cards between 19-30%. I contacted serveral debt conslidation firms that told me that i would need to be late on my payments before they can help me.
Can anyone recommed a non profit debt managment firm?

If so, what are the companies names, numbers and/or web addresses? I have been considering doing one of these programs for some time now, but I want to be sure I don’t pick a company that will be more harm than good. What kinds of questions should I ask a representative, once I find a company? Are there any fees involved? And how much is too much? I need serious advice here because these companies will have my personal information and debt record, so I want it to be with someone who will actually help me, not just make a quick buck. I have been researching some companies, but I am still not certain which is the best. How do you know? Thank you in advance for your help.

I contacted a debt collector about a debt owed. He kept prying and asking “how much will i get back in taxes and when will i get it back” then he told me that it sounds like i shouldn’t have a problem paying it then, and then asked what other bills i had to worry about paying. I am 22 years old with a 2 yr old child. I told him a have many bills to worry about paying. I was just wondering if he can legally ask me personal questions about my taxes and other priorities. He made me feel very uncomfortable and i was almost in tears. Is there anything i can do?

My Discovered card has offered me a personal loan to pay all of my credit card debt on one bill. They quoted me 12.9 % @ a fixed rate for a $20,000 loan. Well, my credit card rates range from 8.7 to 10.9 (variable). Discover told me that even though the rate is higher I would be able to pay off my debt faster. And any additional money paid would go straight to the principal. And my credit score may increase because I would free up my credit card debt. But I don’t know. Right now I am paying the min on my credit card bills @ $550 a month and the Discover loan would be $540 a month and I would have my debt paid off in 4 years. What do you think ?

Okay first things first, I have an apartment and I really don’t want to lose it nor the stuff that is in my apartment, I am just at a point in life right now that isn’t good.
I got cut back on my hours at work and I’m only pulling in about 1300.00 dollars a month now, I was making more than double that. It’s horrible and very upsetting.
I have 27,900.00 worth of debt and this is a combination of a car loan, health loans and credit cards.
I went to capital one and was going to fill out an application for a personal loan but they said it was by invitation only. The interest rate on CitiBank is too high. I really would like some advice, I know Bankruptcy is a low trashy way to get out of the debt I created but I was making more than this.
Mind you I am 21 years old and by the time I’m 28 I’d have it off my record. So what do you think I should do and please do not recommend one of them prosper or other sites where people bid on your debt, I am not looking to get into that I just want a personal loan with a low interest rate.
I have wonderful credit 750 and I always make my payments on time, it’s just now I’m really starting to dig into my checking account and I’m getting worried with how fast it is diminishing.
Also I have been filling out applications everywhere for a second job but no one seems to be hiring with this economy the way it is!
