We have about $6000 in credit card debt and about $14000 in a personal loan. My husband wants to pay it off quickly, so he wants to spend every paycheque on paying it off until it’s gone (of course leaving enough money for monthly rent/bills/other expenses).

I want to pay it off too, but I’d like to leave a little extra money in the account just in case.

What’s the best way to go about paying off the debt?

I’m going thru a divorce & learning of thousands of dollars in collection & more that are delinquent & on there way to a collection. Yesterday I learned of a credit card company that will settle for a % of the debt. I contacted this company & informed them that I have never applied for a credit card in my life. They had all of the personal info on me needed to apply for a credit card. I have a feeling that my soon to be ex applied for & received a card in my name. They informed me to go to the police dept. & fill out a fraud/identity theft form. Is this the correct action to take? I had trusted that my ex was taking care of our finances but apparently she wasn’t. I will probably have to file bankruptcy. Should I do this after our divorce is final and the debts are divided or file together with my ex, before the divorce is final? I obviously want to know ALL of my debt that is out there. How do I go about finding this out? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have a lot of personal debt brought on by poor choices and a little hard luck over the past several years. We are all employed (me, hubby and 20-something son) finally and making enough to pay the bills and eat, etc but the “damage” is already done on the ‘ole credit report – going from approximately 780 to 511. I will not go the bankruptcy route as I do not see that as a viable option for me, however, my question is, since the FICO # has fallen so low now, should I just go ahead and go w/ debt settlement company to help me get these bills paid off or continue with the “snowball repayment” plan I worked out for us. In the past 5-6 months, I have already paid down $6000 in debt using the snowball but I did see an $11 K charge-off by a creditor appear on my credit report this month so, that pretty much sinks the ship so to speak. Thanks for your good advice!

I am fearful of our nation’s future in regards to economics because of the 12 trillion $ debt we are in. I’m looking for steps that individuals can take in helping out nation recover from this whole mess. Is getting rid of our own individual debt a viable solution?

My fiance declared bankruptcy about 4 years ago, and I have had been enrolled in a credit counseling service to pay off personal debt (I will be finished paying it off this year). Both of our credit scores are slightly under 670. We want to start looking for a home in about a year, and will be able to put down about 20%, but we are concerned about getting approved for a mortgage. Anyone who can share any knowledge about this would be appreciated!

I am negotiating a settlement of a medical bill with a hospital. According to People’s Court which I watch almost daily, there is phrase which you can write on the back of a personal check which signifies the satisfaction of said debt. It goes something like this: “For the full payment for all goods and services”. I need the exact verbiage. I am from Oklahoma. Thank you. Also I will gladly accept any other advice in negotiating this bill down to a reasonable amount. Thank you again.

I’m in debt for about $5,000.I haven’t paid my cc bills for over a year. I was unemployed and going to school. I now have my teaching credential, but no permanent job. So, I need something that’s not going to double or triple my principle. Any personal experiences would be great.
