If you have a car loan, do you make extra payments on it, and if so, how much? What are the benefits of paying off your car early versus putting the money in your emergency fund?
I’m trying to determine the best thing to do in my situation (I owe $6,300 on my 2002 car at 4.39 percent and I’m earning 4.4% in ING, not including other funds in CDs making higher rates). In a couple of months when my personal debt is gone, I was planning to make extra payments on my car to retire it early. What would you do?

for example… my experience was that I went through such a difficult time learning how to manage my money wisely and efficiently. I never knew the purpose of credit and loans and I feel it is essential for children to learn this from the get go just so we avoid further debt in our society.

I am 29 years old. I have no credit card debt. I have $18,000 in a high yield savings account (5%). I have $2200 in Mutual Funds (made 10% so far YTD). I have $12,500 in my 401K. I own a house in Texas that I currently rent out. The rent pays for the mortgage. I rent in California and cannot buy as I am here only for a short period of time. I save approximately $1500 to $2000 a month. Where should I put this money? More mutual funds, high yeild savings, 401K, IRA or other? I don’t want to put it all in 401K as I have access to that when I am 65 and I plan on retiring before that (50 to 55) – so I would want access to the money well before that! Do I have too much money in the high yield savings account? I am willing to take an above average amount of risk but nothing on the crazy risky side! Need some financial guidance world…please help! I know I’m not doing too bad, but I know I could be on my way to financial freedom in the future with some right guidance. Thanks!

What I mean is, in the Great Depression people were buying out goods with money they couldn’t pay back and the stock market also had investors doing the same. In this recession, the action of people buying things they couldn’t afford or that wasn’t worth it became the problem.
My point is, if the bad decisions of individual people or corporations are causing these recessions, does that mean that this is a normal occurrence, especially when people are allowed to get themselves into debt and make unwise investment decisions?

I have an auto loan with $5867 left for the next 22 mons, CC with $5000.00 @ 15.99%APR, CC with $3,000 @ 15.99%APR and CC with $2,000 @ 20.99APR. Would it be a good or bad decision to pay some of this debt off with a personal bank loan of 6,000 @ 18.99 for 36 mons? How can I make this all work in my favor?
