personal debt
Lori Beth asked:

My best guy friend since high school helped me out with some bills when I was having a really difficult time. He said “gave” me money and I said “lent” me money. He never asked or anticipated being paid back (to my knowledge). I always said I was going to pay him back.

We are both married. My husband left me and his wife cheated on him. He and I expressed feelings for one another. He decided to reconcile with his wife, something I wholeheartedly support. She has contacted me a couple times to ridicule me for my behavior (which was reprehensible, I know), but I have had no contact with him during that time. It’s been almost a year.

The last email I sent him promised I would pay him back. I am now in a financial position to do so and I would like to. I’m not looking for any contact from him. I would overnight the cash to his office so his wife wouldn’t have to know about it unless he wanted to tell her.

I think it’s important to pay back my friend, but not to cause further issues in his relationship. Am I able to do both??
I have let it go. I just don’t like feeling like I have an outstanding responsibility.

Also, the amount of the debt is $1,200. Not exactly pocket change.
